Etruscan Tour

Prices

1/2 people 550€ total

3/4 people 590€ total

The tour has been designed for guests who have already seen the famous attractions and beauties of Rome, and are looking for a truly wonderful and exceptional excursion.

From from your B&B Gallery Suite in Civitavecchia, after approx. 1 hour drive through beautiful surrounding valleys, you will arrive to Tuscania, a very ancient town whose origins can be traced back to the Bronze Age. A significant stability of human settlements dates back to the Etruscan period, as witnessed by the numerous necropolis in this area. Etruscans and their ancient history (IV-V cen.) made Tuscania a powerful city thanks to the creation of a compact road network.

With the rise of the Roman dominion in central Italy, most of the Etruscan settlements disappeared, but Tuscania resisted as one of the most important cities, thanks to its advanced architectural development (bath, aqueducts, etc.). After the Etruscan and Roman periods, this area was first depopulated as a result of the Barbarian invasions and then underwent new urbanization, starting in the eighth century. Over the centuries, some of the most beautiful Italian churches were built in Tuscania.

Take a look at a beautiful view from the Restaurant La Torre di Lavello”.

The two most important churches represent a temporary architectural passage of the Romanic style: San Pietro Basilica, with its remarkable façade, the stunning rose-window and the crypt, and Santa Maria Maggiore, just below San Pietro, with its three finely decorated portals. Tuscania, with a population of 8.000, appears today in all its splendor to its visitors, offering a historical town Center with its characteristic fourth-fifth century architecture, enriched by fifty-two churches and numerous fountains.

For lunch we will stop in Ceri, an incredible small village built on the top of a hill made of tufo: since the 9th Century B.C., it preserves the magic atmosphere of those times and, of course, the typical Italian trattoria where youll enjoy a dish of Pappardelle Pasta with Wild Boar meatballs, salad, and the local dessert …mmm yummy!

Cerveteri and the Banditaccia Necropoli will be the next stop. With your tour guide, youll visit the tombs of the Etruscans and the beautiful frescos inside. Youll be able to walk in and discover in the dark the city of death carved into the tufo rock” 2.500 years ago!

For lunch we will stop in Ceri, an incredible small village built on the top of a hill made of tufo, from the 9th Century B.C. until today preserves the magic atmosphere of those times and, of course, the typical Italian trattoria where youll enjoy a dish of Pappardelle Pasta with Wild Boar meatballs, salad, and the local dessert …mmm yummy!

After your lunch, with your Tour Guide you will expore the Necropolis of La Banditaccia” near Cerveteri.

Thousands of tombs exist in the vast cemetery of Cerveteri: they are organized in a city-like plan, with streets, small squares and neighbourhoods. The tombs are of different types depending on period, family status and other criteria. The earliest known are series of rock-cut trenches holding pottery ossuaries containing the ashes of the deceased. Most famous are the tumuli – tombs often containing more than one tomb under an imposing mound. A famous example is known as the Hut Shaped Tomb, from the 4th century. Some of those have electricity and we can see inside all frescos intact because protected by an under-pressure door” like the Tomba dei Rilievi”, other tombs instead must be discovered with a torch that we will bring with us…an adventure like in Indiana Jones Movie!!
